Blueprint Travel Inspiration: Japan

Japan

An introduction to one of the world's most extraordinary destinations and how to start planning your trip.

Japan is unlike anywhere else on earth. It is a country where ancient temples sit in the shadow of neon-lit skyscrapers, where centuries-old food traditions are practiced with as much precision as ever, and where the everyday rituals of life feel like a quiet kind of art form. Whether you already have Japan on your list or have been putting it off, this newsletter is your nudge and your blueprint.

Japan is best experienced as a multi-city journey. Most travelers anchor in Tokyo and Kyoto or Osaka, weaving in day trips along the way. The Shinkansen bullet train connects the major cities quickly and seamlessly, making it easy to cover a lot of ground without feeling rushed. A two-week trip is the sweet spot.

A few things to know before you go: Japan is still a largely cash-based country, so carry yen. Tipping can be seen as offensive because exceptional service is simply the standard. English is limited outside tourist hubs and major hotels, so learning even a handful of Japanese phrases goes a long way. And visiting an onsen (hot spring bath) town is one of the most distinctly Japanese experiences you can have.

We have been building out our Japan guides over the past several months, and the full Japan page is now live with itineraries organized by region, a Know Before You Go section, and guides to the destinations we explored firsthand.
